Monsieur Avi Giloni

Dr. Avi Giloni is Professor of Operations Management and Statistics and chair of Information and Decision Sciences at the Sy Syms School of Business, Yeshiva University. Additionally, Dr. Giloni was the founding director of the Business Honors and Entrepreneurial Leadership Program at Sy Syms. Dr. Giloni received his PhD in Statistics and Operations Research from the Leonard N. Stern School of Business, New York University. Additionally, he earned an M.S. in Statistics and Operations Research from the Leonard N. Stern School of Business, New York University and a  B.A. in Mathematics from the College of Arts and Science, New York University.

Avi has developed the Business Analytics major at the Sy Syms School of Business and has devleloped and taught courses such as Honors Data Driven Decision Making, Data Visualization, and Regression and Visualization. Dr. Giloni’s approach to the curriculum is to integrate the academics and practice by developing and teaching cousres that cover statistical theory along with practical business and data analytics. This approach follows from his focus on both theoretical research and significant data driven consulting. Indeed, while he prepares students for careeers in business and data analytics, in his courses, he stresses the importance of understanding and modeling randomness and risk.  

Avi’s areas of research include forecasting, optimization, time series analysis, stochastic system design and their applications to supply chain and inventory management. His current research agenda focuses on applying time-series analysis and optimization to study the value of information sharing in supply chains as well as to develop novel approaches to improve the efficiency of supply chains. In previous research, he has utilized optimization and mathematical programming approaches to study and develop robust forecasting techniques, such as weighted least absolute deviations regression. Dr. Giloni has published papers in top tier journals including Computational Statistics & Data Analysis, European Journal of Operational Research, IIE Transactions, Management Science, Production and Operations Management, and SIAM Journal on Optimization.

Avi also has significant data driven consulting experience. For example, Avi has had leadership roles on highly successful data science projects in the media industry and has worked with many banks and mortgage companies during his nearly twenty years experience as a consultant in statistical fair lending analytics.
