The importance of Stonehenge

0

Stonehenge is without doubt one of the greatest prehistoric monument in western Europe. This site ranks in importance with other well-renowned sites as the Pyramids of Giza, Machu Picchu and the megalithic structures found in the Maltese Islands . Stonehenge sits at the heart of a landscape rich in other monuments and remains of both the Neolithic and Bronze Age periods.

Recent research within the Stonehenge World Heritage Site has led to the identification of previously unknown sites and, perhaps even more importantly, the re-interpretation of known sites, including Stonehenge itself. Such research traces human influence on the landscape from prehistoric times to the very recent past and presents an up-to-date synthesis of the results of recent fieldwork. The importance of such research gives a total different overview as it presents such a site not only in the sense of just a heap of stones as a megalithic monument pertaining to the Neolithic period and Bronze Age of Europe but also as a historic evolution of chalkland landscapes.
