SCROLL DOWN FOR INSTRUCTIONS

`Start by reading this article and discuss in your journal how current official definitions of "migrants", "refugees" and "asylum seekers" are challenged by the on-going migration crisis at the South-East borders of Europe.

You can also see Unit 2.1 for more information about irregular migration in Mediterranean region, Unit 2.2 about EU norms on asylum seeking, and Unit 2.3 on the case of Syrian refugees.

Don't forget to have a look to what others have done in their journals!

The deficit of generalization.

Over the past years, migration management has developed to be more sophisticated as a response to the development in our world, the reasons why people move from one place to another has changed, now we have a new term, ( mixed migration ), and to call a person who left their country merely a migrant is not enough.
Practitioners now use more terms and definitions, not to stigmatize people, but it's a necessity to ensure each and every person receives the help required.
the fact that practitioners differentiate between migrants and refugees is needed, because migrants have different needs than refugees, they share one thing, the fact that they're in a new place, a new city far from home, but they are still different.
nowadays, even migrants are categorized, ad again, it's a necessity, to ensure that a forced migrant who left their home because of a drought in their village is not the same as an economic migrant who left their country to have a better job, they're both in need for help. but they might need different ones.
In the south east border of Europe, where mass flow of people has taken place, we saw that media uses different approaches, those of the governmental bias tend to advertise migrants & refugees as dangerous, it the governmental media don't use specific categorization, but instead they generalize, to impose fear among the society, while on the other hand, humanitarians tend to use more specific categorization, as they know the need to help these migrants & refugees due to their vulnerable state.
The challenge remains active and ongoing, it is not an easy task for those who work to provide protection and ensure dignity and support to vulnerable mixed migrants & refugees, especially when the flow is large and thousands of people are moving in an irregular state.
Those moving people were faced with closed borders, shouts, screams, insults and anger sometimes, as well as welcoming hands, smiles and compassion other times, their struggle was extended, they have to fight another battle, the one that is to prove their need for help in the country they're trying to reach, and this battle can't be won unless they're given the chance to speak and explain why the left home.
I believe that generalization is a deficit we need to remove, we generalize when we don't care about details, and for mixed migrants and refugees, details are everything.!
