Bluestones the key?

2

It seems there may have been different uses for Stonehenge at different points in it's history. The observatory theory reminds me of the Dead Sea scrolls, where a significant proportion of these mostly religious documents are calendric in nature - allowing the religious elite to determine the dates for multiple ceremonial events, not just the solstices. This would favour a lunar/stellar tracking purpose. I'm particularly interested in the bluestones - why would the builders take the trouble to transport them so far? a) They followed a migration of people along the same route as suggested in the video; b) They were the easiest stones to transport, which would favour the sea/river transport theory (otherwise they'd source from the SouthWest); c) The stones were believed to have special (magical?) properties. If so what could the nature of those properties be, and is there any chemical analysis to offer any clues? I can't believe they took the trouble just for a two-tone colour effect! Are there any other alternative reasons for sourcing from S.Wales?

It is very possible Simon that the people of the area, now know as Wales, brought them to Stonehenge to add them to the centre of their joint known world thus creating a united tribe culture. There is some evidence that there was a blue Stonehenge near to the site of the Preseli quarry. There seems to be some evidence that there was a form of peace throughout the land for 400 years around this period.
Hope this helps Simon.
Kind regards
Paul

Thanks Paul, so you think the totemic idea is most likely? What is the evidence for a peaceful period? Does this mean there is evidence for non-Peace for other periods?
