SCROLL DOWN FOR INSTRUCTIONS

`Start by reading this article and discuss in your journal how current official definitions of "migrants", "refugees" and "asylum seekers" are challenged by the on-going migration crisis at the South-East borders of Europe.

You can also see Unit 2.1 for more information about irregular migration in Mediterranean region, Unit 2.2 about EU norms on asylum seeking, and Unit 2.3 on the case of Syrian refugees.

Don't forget to have a look to what others have done in their journals!

Not all asylum seekers are refugees, but all refugees are migrants?

People undertaking the difficult and often deadly routes to a country where they hope for safe living conditions have various goals in mind which gives a challenge to label these people as a whole.
In newspapers, people on board of a boat are often called refugees while a refugee is someone who was granted international protection in a state. They are also referred to as "migrants" which seems to be an accurate name if we take into account the fact that they left their home country thus moved from a country to another one. They cannot be called asylum seekers until an asylum is not logded in one state by them and they are "irregular migrants" if they stay in the territory of a country without asylum claim.
In media, it is of utmost importance to clearly define the group of people we are talking about. Given the present circumstances and especially the growing xenophobic attitude in many countries towards immigrants, migrants, economic migrants, irregular migrants are words that may be used to fuel hatred.
