The Australian Pacific Solution
What is breathtaking about Australia's asylum policy (and it shares this with the UK, and, quite possibly, other countries) is that Australia seeks to prevent asylum seekers from ever reaching its shores, and to "process" them offshore, precisely because it knows that if the asylum seekers reached Australia, they would probably be entitled to asylum. Somewhat reminiscent of the US establishing the camp in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, because they know that if it were on US soil, the inmates would be entitled to the protection of US law, which would order them to be released.
