Creating a Culture of Learning for Martina

enter image description here enter image description here

Imagine Martina from Unit 3 again. She is working 40 hours a week and on top of that, needs to learn about managing and leading a team in an online training class.
So now Martina is trying to integrate her learning and training into her work. However, she feels uncomfortable reading a text or watching a video as part of her online training in front of her team at work. In the end, she decides to learn at home in her free time, making her more stressed than before.

Help Martina create a learning culture in her team or office!

For example: She could create a corner in the office with a flag on it, when it is learning time, every Friday afternoon for 2 hours. She could block her calendar, creating deadlines for herself to finish the tasks, have open conversations with her staff members about her learning experiences etc.

How can you support her?

There are quite a few ideas you can develop after having read all the implications that a corporate digital strategy involves in the main and the additional material.

Do you need more inspiration for the task? Then have a look at the following links and articles:

Put yourself in the shoes of the learner: This nicely written article in the Washington Post illustrates the power of spending two days as a learner and experiencing their everyday lives.

How much time do you spend on learning a week? This short article by Jane Hart includes a poll about how many hours people spend on learning. She also wrote about 5 steps towards Modern Workplace Learning. It is important is to see the change, be the change and support the change.

Or maybe you get some inspiration by a rather controversial article and push for employees to learn in their free time? Quentin Hardy wrote in the NY Times about how AT&T "Tells Its Workers: Adapt, or Else".

Find some images that visualize how you can help Martina and how Martina can create a culture of learning. Upload these images as part of your journal entry and your ideas so that we can collect them at the end and create a collage.

Creating a culture of Learning

First of all for me there's the questions if she really has the opportunity for concentrated learned being at the office. It might be the case that she will be able finish her lectures at home in a shorter period of time than working on them at the office. But maybe there's a family and dogs around at home and so it's the opposite way? So my plan would be to discuss with her, when it's the best time for her to learn during a day - most people have prefered times to concentrate - and what might be the best place for her.
In case learning at home would be better for her, arriving late once a week or leaving earlier in order to do her courses might be a good idea. Of course to be discussed with her boss and to be communicated to her team. In that case it's important as well to agree upon her availability during the "learning time": When the phone will be constantly ringing and emails are popping up with requests for immediate action, the possibility to focus on learning will be very limited for her. So the basic questions about allowance for home office work will be one major aspect here.

Another idea is to create "learning timezones" within the company - but that will need agreement on how to deal with her availability again. Maybe there are separate rooms she can book for two hours a week, if possible at the same time every week as people then become familiar with the situation. Or the learning time could be an initiative for the whole team, where all team members can work on agreed projects for their own development. Or the learning times can be "silent timezones" during which her team appreciate as well the possibility to do important work en block without being disturbed from others. These silent times need to be marked with a sign ont he desk (please find relevant pictures attached at the bottom).

Or in case that's not possible for whatever reason, she maybe can split her learning time: Watching the videos at home, but working on the learning tasks while being at the office.

And I would highly recommend to immediately transfer the learning times and deadlines to her calendar in order to make them fixed appointments.
