Migrants and refugees

0

In my opinion, migrants move from one country to another by choice, while asylum seekers, who later become refugees do not have real alternatives.

In the past few months I have been following BBC reports on the situation in the Mediterranean, and in Europe. I have found that there was a shift as the number of people arriving rose significantly. While people were first mainly referred to as refugees, and the phenomenon was called "refugee crisis", the terminology changed, and they all suddenly became migrants and the situation was described as "migrant crisis".

I believe that it is the media's responsibility to use the right terminology, and it is impossible to determine one's reasons for walking thousands of miles across Europe and the dangerous waters.

The only term that should not be used to describe either migrants or refugees is "illegal". No person is illegal, however, only authorities can determine whether the individual is at risk in their own country or not. Still, it is hard to prove one's case without papers and far away from home.
