In the UK Political, and Social policy is pushing for greater inclusion and opportunity for disabled people to be economically active and have access to learning and employment.

Education and effective technology has opened up a great deal of opportunity for disabled people - making learning accessible - more disabled people are achieving higher degrees in the university systems globally, however there is a lag in the Corporate Learning and development sector. The impact of not ensuring accessible corporate learning systems not only has the potential to damage a company's performance and also discriminate against effective employees in terms of performance management and their responsibility to keep skills up to date.

Some of the greatest barriers come from procurement that does not ensure accessibility to the full range of staff that may contribute to the operation of the organisation, this is both in terms of cost and attitudes due to lack of awareness or resources.

some key issues for consideration would include;

  1. Ensuring Technical accessibility for disabled users - i.e.. captioning, audio visual description, Text size and colour, screen reading comparability.
  2. Making the business case for the additional accessibility that needs to be added. It is very difficult to find an off the shelf solution that have all of the functionality built in and that is cost effective. Customising existing systems or Custom build often is too expensive.
  3. Understanding the legal requirements of UK legislation may not apply internationally in the Disability context, therefore there can be conflicts between meeting the standards required by law.
