Community based art - Art engaging with people, and therefore, society

0

Hey again everybody,

may I say, I am really getting distracted by the interesting entries you guys wrote and write, so finally, here is one by myself again:

How does engaging with art help us to better understand (Chinese) society?

Mmh, difficult. I would like to turn the quesition around a little and share some thoughts on how art that engages with people can possibly help understanding societies.

Art that engages with society is often also called "community based art". (My topic exactly, as the community manager in this course ;-))
By society in this context, I mean people, their values, their goals, their understanding of life and of culture, agreements on right and wrong, and so on. To me really its people who build a society.

Simply put, community based art would be art that results from artist(s) working with and through a community hence people hence a part of a society. As there are more authors than just the one "known artist", it reflects a lot more experiences, opinions, perspectives on a society and so on, which in turn could be extracted by exploring this art.

So I am very interested in examples of such art from China.
Do you know any?

Ai Weiwei's kind of activism-art hits some aspects of this art, of course, though he often remains the only visible/trackable author of his artworks (which can also be a shelter from punishment for other, less famous people) but there must be others.

His actions in a greek refugee camp lately have received wide comment, I know, but to me they are (together with his plans to do a film about the current "refugee crisis") are a good example of global culture in the arts

Here is a link for mor information on this:
