Global culture

1

As a Hong Kong contemporary visual artist who has exhibited worldwide and largely influenced by American contemporary art due to 11 years of growing up in the USA, upon my return to HK, it was clear to me that I had to learn more about my roots and heritage.
I dislike waiting for the bus or riding on the train and prefer to walk around town. I am always intrigued by the old historical parts of Hong Kong and I love experiencing everyday life and immersing myself into the strong Chinese culture that resonated around Hong Kong. On a sad note, the modernization and influences of global culture of HK is inevitable.
From the migration of major foreign brands to the invasion of media culture from western worlds, the effects of global culture has made a major influence on Hong Kong's developments thus changing our lifestyle, the way we think and possibly some local political views.
It is clear that the old historical parts of Hong Kong are beginning to disappear due to modernization and shortage of space. The efforts of trying to preserve relics, retain old buildings from the colonial era have been quite difficult due to costs, time and lack of interests. We can only cherish the large part of history from black & white photography and collection of objects collected by advocates, scholars and enthusiasts.

Hey Chun,
I think your story is a quite common complaint heard in China, and probably other Asian countries as well, that the drawback of the extremely fast modernization and adoption of some western values and cultural aspects comes at a loss of their native cultural heritage. This is probably an inevtitable consequence of global culturalization, although i must admit that i when i look at my own country, Holland, i don't immediately recognize a similar loss of Dutch cultural heritage as a consequence of the globalization as you describe happened in Hong Kong. So what is your stance on the difference between the two? What do you think are the reason some countries seem to 'suffer' more from the globalization than others? I'm eager to hear your views on it.
