Development of the Unknown Artist

2

Maybe the changes can be summarized as follows:
In the beginning, the aim of the CCAA was finding THE unknown artist, since almost every artist was unknown. Now its more finding a UNKNOWN artist, apart from the multitude of established artists. Therefore there is the new category of best young artist.
I guess this change was fueled by the CCAA itself. But maybe also globalization and the fact that contemporary art got a status symbol in China contributed to this change.

Dear Beatrice
You are quite right about the changing aims of the CCAA.
At the end of the nineties, the Chinese art scene as we know it today was non existent. The CCAA opened up a platform for different actors; to connect, artists, curators or critics. It helped building a network and thus helped to start to understand how, where and what kind of art was produced and exhibited. So in the beginning it was all about establishing this network.
Over time, this network grew and thus the CCAA could broaden their focus, because the art scene itself had developed over the last 20 years, creating a gallery scene, several new museums or the establishing of auction houses for instance.
The CCAA reflects those changes and adapting the award to a changing environment has made it such a vital tool promoting CCA.
Kind regards
Barbara
