What types of digital learning formats are you already using privately and/or in your company?
Using or have used quite a wide range since 2006
LMS – have put in place an online academy using an LMS as the core
Elearning – have developed a range of e-learning courses covering technical and business applications, e.g. surveying, geotechnics, subsea engineering, project management, HSE
Virtual classrooms – have used a variety including webex, gotomeeting, gototraining, LLIFT – some more interactive than others. Used for both technical learning and business learning, including management development
Webinars – both live and recorded
Video – Lynda.com / TED
iTunesU trial
Tablets as delivery devices
Also personal experience of MOOCs (FutureLearn) as well as MBA part time using some distance learning and online portals.

Successes
All of them have been successes in their own way, either as proof of concepts, trials of new technologies and approaches, or for the mass deployment of various learning activities

Challenges
Keeping up with technology – for example the shift from PCs to tablets and the death of Flash. Also the problem of vendor reliance and what happens when they change file / data formats and you have legacy content.
Assuming the organisation knows what you are doing and keeps up to date – you need to constantly market what you have done and what you can do, as people come and go.

Learnings
Ensure your strategy and intentions fits your organisational model and is aligned to the business needs. Work with the business to identify needs and opportunities to use and showcase what digital learning can do for the organisation, whether it be compliance (e.g. anti-bribery global deployment, ICT) or specific themes (e.g. health and safety culture)

Recommendations
Allow a portion of your resource, labour or otherwise, to maintenance of existing content. We have a fairly large library of Flash based materials that is becoming obsolete and needs ported to newer technology.
Also, keep it simple, for example when implementing a digital learning strategy. Tools like LMS’s have many features, all of which at some point might be useful, but in the early stages you need to get all of your users engaged and this is much easier to do if the platform is simple to use without too many features. You can enable these later as knowledge and experience builds.
Communicate, communicate, communicate, or market, market, market, what you are doing and can offer.
