While the first account of any historical feature, particularly one as well known as Stonehenge, will always be important (if only for the cultural context of the time), I don't think it's true that archaeologists are working under the shadow of Geoffrey of Monmouth. His account of the building of Stonehenge has been so thoroughly disproved by evidence which shows it was built much earlier, that it is more useful in showing us the mythologies and ideologies of 12th century people than it does of the building of Stonehenge. I think that William Stukely is actually a much more influential figure to current archaeologists as his theory that Stonehenge was built by Druids has persisted in the public consciousness much more, even though again evidence suggests that this was probably not the case.
