SCROLL DOWN FOR INSTRUCTIONS

`Start by reading this article and discuss in your journal how current official definitions of "migrants", "refugees" and "asylum seekers" are challenged by the on-going migration crisis at the South-East borders of Europe.

You can also see Unit 2.1 for more information about irregular migration in Mediterranean region, Unit 2.2 about EU norms on asylum seeking, and Unit 2.3 on the case of Syrian refugees.

Don't forget to have a look to what others have done in their journals!

The definition, does not matter

No one leaves the place of birth, residence, the familiar environment, the friends for fun, so I think that it is hypocrite to make difference between the different migrants. If I would like to express it sharp, it does makes a lots of difference if someone slowly starve to death, because of economic situation or to be killed in a war. Still, I understand that the war would suddenly make people to become stateless, so they need a quick solution for their need, but that does not mean that there is no need for long-term solutions as well. In fact we really need to think about long-term solutions.

It is a high responsibility, to move a great number of people, because of cultural differences they can suffer, and come into conflict. It happens often when if different populations must live together. Every person and society needs a time to make the rules of living together. If there is no enough time the host population, and the arriving population can be violent.

I think that the West should urgently restraining itself from unnecessary luxuries. The western societies should not humiliate people living in poor countries by showing their wealth. It is a way of aggression. However, it would be good if the Europeans would migrate into poor countries, because there is a greater need for skilled people. This should be carried out in such a way that the recipient countries would understand their situation and why they need qualified language teachers, engineers, doctors, etc.

I think that the whole issue of migrants should be rethink creatively. The people should be encouraged to stay at home, by helping them to build livable societies. The rapid and large-crowd movement can leads to tragedies and it should be avoided.
