To build or not to build
Theory that Stonehenge was some kind of observatory seems obsolete - we can find some kind of analogy with constelations if we try. Similar situation is with other ancient cultures - ancient Egypt for example. Giza pyramids are often seen as connested with Sothis (Sirius) etc. Ancient societies were aware of natural phenomenons, but would they invest such effort in building observatory? Their system of belives could be in some relation to son, moon etc. but more practical things also could have been in focus like life cycles of animals, plants and members of society.
If it was a temple - that implies that level of social complexity had to be very high. Maybe it is the case, but there is a general problem in archaeology with explaining every artefact or building in relation to religion when practical purpose is not apparent.
