Chapter 1 Journal Activity

Just stones or landscape?

To my mind Stonehenge is surely an integral part of the landscape which surrounds it. Given the relatively small population of Neolithic Britain (compared to today) the prevalence of so many features in such a relatively small area surely indicates inter connectivity. Likewise the avenue is further evidence of a connection.

I like the theories about wood being the material of the living, and stone being the material of the dead. In this light the stones might be the end point of a procession through the landscape (possibly starting at Woodhenge?) perhaps leading an important corpse from the land of the living to the land of the dead.

In conclusion the whole landscape seems to have been a very special place for the people concerned - perhaps a "Vatican City" of its day?
