I believe the engagement we now have with CCA is with art from a very worldly and affluent society, in some ways more open than those we describe as democratic. It does not reflect the struggle and underground nature of previous decades. It will be interesting to view the +M gallery when it begins showing retrospect collections of now established Chinese artist and how the conversation of those artist with Western audiences has changed. This engagement will give us a truer more rounded understanding.

Many of us believe we live in open societies, but do we? New Zealand is conservative, with a degree of racial intolerance and yet little of the art produced here shows this.
I just read the article on Cao Fei and her retrospective at MoMa, it answers some of my questions on Chinese Art today with a lovely comparison with her fathers work, she is someone I will follow with interest.
