Goal

In Chapter 1 you outlined your motivation and learning objectives you liked to achieve with this course. Please note in your journal if you reached your learning targets, what you enjoyed about the course and what you missed in the program.

Reflection

1

I really enjoyed this course very much. This is my first online course and I was very curious to see how this would work. It turned out to be ideal for me because on some days I could not attend at the designated time and so I could download the respective units and study them later on.

As to my goals formulated in the first journal entry, the course provided a good insight into the development and situation of contemporary art in China. The additional material was very informative and helpful.

As Ariana has already mentioned, it would have been great to get to know one or the other award winning artist and his work - maybe as additional material - in order to “get a feel” for what is to be understood by contemporary art in China, especially since “contemporary” has a somewhat different meaning in the Chinese context. Getting to know some exemplary works would allow learning about the topics and issues dealt with by Chinese artists and maybe to understand what aspects where important to the jury and why these artists were selected.

This course has nourished my motivation to learn more about the art developments in China and I have started to read Minglu Gao’s book about total modernity and the avant-garde in 20th century Chinese art, which is very interesting.

Many thanks to all of you in the course team! If ever there is a follow-up course, please let me know!

Thank you for your feedback Inés

Here is another literature tip to “get a feel” for what is to be understood by contemporary art in China,:
The catalogue accompanying the exhibition "Chinese Whispers - Recent Art from the Sigg and M+ Collections" (in English and German) features interviews with many Chinese Contemporary Artists (practically every artist featured in the show) and their own perspectives on their works, moreover the book includes two essays, one by M+ Curator Pi Li and one by art critique Carol Yinghua Lu.
It is available at the Kunstmuseum Bern, the Zentrum Paul Klee and in swiss book stores.

It can also be ordered online, e.g. here (German site)

or here (Swiss site)
