Global culture

2

I am a Swiss born translator and artist living in Switzerland. Culture on a daily basis is very much characterized by my surroundings, by what’s going on in the community I live in, by interacting with people in my environment, by speaking my mother tongue.

I think a good example for global culture is food. When I was in China, I drank the best Cappuccino coffee I’ve ever had.

Hi Ines
as I am reading all these journals, i think that food is an important theme in this course, you are not the only one interested in that. Why not share more about the theme? The smellings, the tastes, the coulours and many other aspects?

Hi Elisabeth
Yes, food tells you a lot about globalisation. We eat a lot of food products whose origin we’re not really aware of. I’m thinking of Ketchup for example. There is one theory that says it originates from Asia and was made of fermented soybeans. Sailors brought the sauce to Europe and it was very popular in England. At that time, it still didn’t contain any tomatoes. Through British cookbooks Ketchup also became known in the USA. In the middle of 1900, Ketchup made on the basis of tomatoes was very popular with Americans. The interesting thing about Ketchup is that there is no one Ketchup, but that the product was adapted to the different tastes in the world. Some are sweeter, some spicier.
Unfortunately, when visiting China, I had no chance to taste Ketchup.
