Engaging with art to understand society

2

Engaging with art can be one way to get an insight into a society; however, this is only possible in an open society with no constraints on freedom of speech and other restrictive rules. Also art has to be accessible to a wide public, to everyone, and I believe it should be the subject of a public discourse and a dialogue between the artists and the viewers. Personally, I’m very fond of artist talks. Not every artwork is self-explanatory and such talks allow artists to explain their motivation for an artwork, their ideas, visions, criticism, the circumstances (political, social, personal environment) that led to the artwork. Furthermore, I believe we have to look at a lot of Chinese art to be able to get a “feel” for Chinese society. I’m really looking forward to the opening of M+ and the chance to get to see lots of Chinese art.

Hi Inés,

Have you seen Christine McCormicks latest journal entry? She emphasizes the importance of knowing about the context of an artwork e.g. an artists background, to develop a deeper understanding, this might interest you:

In case you live in Switzerland or are going to travel here in the nearest future, you can have a look at many chinese contemporary artworks from the Sigg collection at Kunstmuseum Berne and Zentrum Paul Klee Berne right now. The exhibition is called "Chinese Whispers" and a visit is highly recommendable.
