Stonehenge and Art

0

Stonehenge influence on British culture is important, mainly in literature, from Geoffrey of Monmouth to Bernard Cornwall’s Stonehenge novel, and painters (works of some of them seen in the course).
James I asked Inigo Jones to investigate Stonehenge; his conclusions were at last printed in 1655 in “The most notable Antiquity of Great Britain, vulgarly called Stonehenge on Salisbury Plain, Restored by Inigo Jones Esquire”, the first book dedicated exclusively to Stonehenge; in his book, Jones considered Stonehenge to be of Roman manufacture and a temple, dedicated to Coelus. This work could be considered, perhaps, a seminal archaeological work.
An interesting aspect would be to collect folklore about Stonehenge (giants and so on).
