Create a journal entry: Define your goals

Goal

Please note in your journal what drives you to take part in the online course Chinese Contemporary Art Award and what goals you want to achieve with the course.

Why am I here?

4

I live in the Caribbean (on Barbados for the moment) & have been trained as a lawyer & adviser in biosafety & climate change. Above all, though, I am an artist. I realised this about myself comparatively late in life, but it was a defining point of my being. Art is therefore a hugely interesting & important part of my life, so any course that focused on it was going to merit my attention. I was also intrigued by what I hope will be the chance to gain useful insight into the Chinese contemporary art scene--its key players, actors, & schools of thought--& the chance to form helpful connections with other artists, curators, & collectors there & elsewhere.

I'm also interested in exploring the idea of the universality of motivation & impetus in the artist's creative process. I am an abstract expressionist painter--a school not especially well appreciated on Barbados or other Caribbean islands--& my work is therefore intensely personal & highly individualistic. Every time I plunge into the depths to retrieve/bring forth/give birth to a new work, it's an exhilarating & life-renewing struggle. I'd like to share that approach with others here & see it in the context of the experiences of artists from very different cultural backgrounds--see that creative struggle reflected from others' viewpoints, as in a mirror. How will they relate to me, & what will I see in myself & my work then?

Hi Fred
indeed, you put a lot of very interesting questions and I hope, that they will be discussed in a way that you can profit a lot.
As the head of center further education of Zurich university of the arts, I am very interested in the learning processes that students and participants of a course can experience and also share. You as an artist can bring in a lot of arguments to discuss with other participants - the mirror is a good picture for that.

I suggest to open a discussion file on this platform to get more answers for you - and also to read logbooks of other participants and to follow some of them.

As I read them all, i can tell you that this is a very interesting process and you will finde quite a lot of similarities and interesting partners to discuss.

I am looking forward to hearing from you
Elisabeth

Kristin Wolz, an artist of words: https://iversity.org/en/profiles/kristin-wolz/journals/ccaa-chinese-contemporary-art-award/chinese-eyes

Eduard Fernandez, who met several artists when living in China: https://iversity.org/en/profiles/eduard-fernandez/journals/ccaa-chinese-contemporary-art-award/goals

Charlotte Hug, who is an artist working with different media: painting, music, audiovisuals and more: https://iversity.org/en/profiles/charlotte-hug/journals/ccaa-chinese-contemporary-art-award/chinese-whispers-tradition-and-the-bridge-to-the-actuality

Elisabeth, Joline,

Thanks very much indeed for getting back to me so quickly with your input! I have begun reading the linked entries of my fellow students & making comments. There's a lot of interesting material right here to get me involved.

Cheers,

Fred
