SCROLL DOWN FOR INSTRUCTIONS

Read this article and share your views with colleagues. Is the Australian "Pacific solution" against human rights? What do you think of Nauru and the other "prison islands"?

As always, you can share your view by writing in your own journal, but also commenting on what others have written.

Naru, prison solutions and human rights

To determine what is a human right in this case, we must consider social and economic as well as civil and political rights. It is also essential to consider rights related to mobility, forced displacement, the impacts of the move on health and safety (which was not described in the article when discussing the conditions in Naru or the prisons), and other key rights that are guaranteed in the UDHR and other UN Conventions as signed/ratified by Australia. It would be important to review these documents and use them as an advocacy tool to demonstrate that the "Pacific solution" actually goes against human rights (and specifically, the agreements and commitments Australia has made).
