SCROLL DOWN FOR INSTRUCTIONS

`Start by reading this article and discuss in your journal how current official definitions of "migrants", "refugees" and "asylum seekers" are challenged by the on-going migration crisis at the South-East borders of Europe.

You can also see Unit 2.1 for more information about irregular migration in Mediterranean region, Unit 2.2 about EU norms on asylum seeking, and Unit 2.3 on the case of Syrian refugees.

Don't forget to have a look to what others have done in their journals!

Are young men refugees?

0

Many young men come seeking asylum in Europe and discerning refugees among them fis difficult. Even treating each newcomer from Syria, where war reigns, as a refugee doesn't solve the problem for at least two reasons:
1. Many migrants already have fake Syrian passports to ensure them refugee status.
2. European countries are unwilling to take all the Syrians that escaped from their troubled home, especially since they suspect some of them of being terrorists.
Polish government refused to take any refugees and claimed that it helps Syrians who stayed home or took refugee in neighbouring countries. Thus, the government admits that there are many refugees in need of help, however Poland refuses to grant them protection within its borders saying that they are safe in refugee camps in Liban or Turkey, thus if they choose to come to Poland that means they are no longer refugees but economic migrants.
