Chapter 1 Journal Activity

The whole Stonehenge Landscape

0

I think that although technically the name 'Stonehenge' would just refer to the stones and henge ditch around them, we cannot see this as separate to the rest of the landscape. The fact that the stones were moved specifically to that location from so far away, and that the area had pre-existing signs of activity and construction (especially the cursus monument) suggests that the whole surrounding area was of particular significance before the stone circle was planned. Furthermore, the fact that the site continued to be of importance to later communities, who will have recognised the significance of the stones even if for different reasons, means we should definitely see the stones as part of their wider landscape. If we don't do this then we will be unable to appreciate their full significance.
