Über den Kurs
Course “International Environmental Management: Municipal Solid Waste, Hazardous Waste & Wastewater” contains an overview of the various factors that affect the waste generation, and answers the question “Why is it dangerous for the environment and for people?”.
It explains how it is better to classified different waste to deal with them further, and what must be done, as a result, to solve the problem of waste accumulation. There are some necessary knowledge about practical tools, which are widely used in developed countries for effective waste management, and overview of the most often used practical methods of industrial and household waste treatment in the course. Practical tools – physical, chemical, mechanical, biological and biochemical, which may be used for environmental damage elimination are observed.
There is one more important problem for all large towns - municipal sewage sludge, so special attention is paid to this kind of waste processing and storage. In addition, the problem of accumulated “tailings” of mining plants and sludge from galvanic plants as objects of accumulated environmental damage is considered.
Some examples of the most difficult situation in Russian regions is considered and reasons of such situation are overviewed.
Who is this course for?
The course is developed for people of all educational backgrounds. Students of all levels of training who do not have special education in the field of waste management can be listeners of the course. The course can also be used as an additional material for the remote training of students enrolled in waste management.
What do I need to know?
To understand the essence of the course, you need general knowledge in the field of fundamental disciplines - chemistry, biology, economics, as well as general ideas in the field of environmental management.
What will you have learnt?
Skills and competencies you are going to get out of this course:
- Understanding of the factors affecting efficiency of Municipal Solid Waste Management
- Ability to diagnose environmental problems and problems associated with inefficient waste management and develop practical recommendations
- Ability to improve technological processes from the standpoint of energy and resource saving and minimizing the impact on the environment
- Ability to act in unusual situations and be responsible for the decisions making
- Ability to use regulations, competently develop action plans to reduce environmental damage, environmental management of production processes
- Understanding of the physical, chemical and biological processes which are used for environmental rehabilitation
The first chapter is devoted to the explanation of the basic terms and definitions used in the training course. You will learn new information about sources of waste generation, its content and structure, and also about classification approaches. Behavior of waste components in the environment, mechanisms of chemical substances’ destruction and transformation and their hazard degree will be considered.
The second chapter focuses on the Tools for Effective MSW Management. This chapter is devoted to theoretical approaches answering how to solve the problem of waste and what practical tools should be used to solve them.
In the third chapter, we will analyze modern approaches to the use of alternative energy sources, including waste energy. We will consider what properties of waste affect the increase in their calorific value.
The fourth chapter try to answer a number of questions related to the characteristics of the design and operation of the places which are used for waste disposal: Is it possible to avoid the dumping of waste? What is the difference between a waste landfill and an irregular dump? What may or must be disposed at the landfills? How to make waste disposing safe for the environment and human health? What is the danger of sludge collectors?
The fifth chapter will take you on studying the causes of situations that lead to the occurrence and accumulation of environmental damage. We are going to analyze the most significant and dangerous situations and their environmental consequences with concrete examples, and to understand possible ways for solving the problem, with world experience use.
The sixth chapter will be devoted to the methods of environments rehabilitation. Practical tools and theoretical approaches to the accumulated environmental damage reduction, such as ecotoxicants’ and rehabilitation technologies’ classification, regulation and monitoring frameworks are discussed. Some concrete examples of such dangerous objects, especially those which connected with municipal solid waste ineffective management are considered.
